In April of this year, Gulf Coast Community Services Association, Inc. was a part of a large collaboration of community service organizations that held workshops aimed at educating the Houston-area community on the importance of being financially literate.
Houston Money Week is a free “community-wide financial education initiative that empowers families and individuals to be successful with their financial choices.” As one of Houston Money Week’s community partners, GCCSA held a 2-part series of financial education workshops during the month of April.
The first was a workshop tailored for Social Services professionals – “Your Money Your Goals”. Those who give so much of themselves for the benefit of others deserve to have a gift passed on to them in turn! That is exactly what the interactive workshop, lead by ROMA Trainers Hanna Adams, Executive Director of Central Texas Opportunities, Inc., and Dan Boyd, Executive Director of Community Services of Northeast Texas, Inc., set out to accomplish. Participants were led through a range of new techniques that they in turn may use to pass on to their organizations, clients and possibly use for themselves.
The second workshop was geared specifically for GCCSA Clients. What better way to uphold our mission of uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the residents of Harris County than by equipping our clients with the most up-to-date methods of money management? Attendees were treated to learning various tools that will help them on the road to financial stability and independence. One easy tip that may be harder in practice than it sounds? For every $100 you earn, squirrel away $10 in a savings account, hopefully one that collects interest.
From tips on how to order credit reports, to knowing the process of correcting credit, to advice on the best way to repay debt and save money a little at a time, our Social Service Professionals and Clients alike walked away with powerful information.
We hope to continue our partnership with Houston Money Week so that we may persist in fulfilling our collective missions in empowering, educating and equipping those who are most in need.
